As 2013 Approches, Would you consider Self Employment for better furure

Okay Something i wanted to ask for sometime as a Self-Employed business owner Myself, I thought i would write a post to consider the unfortunate people who use MSE who may be finding it hard after Christmas and the current forward new year arrival

My idea of this post is not to flame anyone on Benefits but have a discussion of what my Grand Father's saying that you cannot find work then create work which is true for me i love being a geeky type chap such as programming Ect,

So i was thinking and if this done before on the forum my aploigies i was hoping some people could dedicate some time to talk about starting up the following

  1. HOw to start a business
  2. getting funding -where to go-who to see
  3. business planning
  4. Self employment Vs Unemployment
  5. Pro and cons of doing it alone
Just a idea as i know alot of people may consider this route in 2013 when the cuts happen,

Thanks again & looking forward to chatting to you all

    Stupid question, but what cuts?

  • The cuts the government will no doubt impose on the little people in order to protect the rich from any losses. You know, things like hospital wards closing, bus services vanishing, bankers making more profit that kind of thing.

@flex: Yes I'd consider self employment and in fact that is exactly what I am wanting to do due to the lack of work situation out there. The only snag is finding something to actually do!

Not everyone who works in a bank is rich!

How will self employment help then for hospital cuts?

It won't.. at least it won't help you or I. It might help the ex NHS workers though if they become self employed doing something else.

This would be a really long answer but Ap007: please consider this

The more self employment started in this country started up and gets to a stage of good growth the more we stable the problems in the economy thus: also paying back to the NHS in taxes and hopefully reviving the services & your point you mentioned

i presumed you meant it like that or if no please evaluate your meaning

Edit: I hate to admit it but the NHS is doomed, Too much PFI money has been spent on new wings and whatever else leaving a huge debt but i started this to see if was possible to start self employment and how to many who may be reading this looking for that information, The NHS will be like America soon and we'll all need private insurance to use it i think.

    anyway thanks for your comments

    Thanks

    less work available
    Taxes being risen
    Higher Utility Bills
    Workfare programs mandatory

So back to my original question do you think starting out as self employment would be lot better then being unemployed? and if you had a idea how would you start it?

It's relatively lonely being self employed.

Most of the time you don't spend much, not because you don't have the money but because your income is so uncertain, so you have to make provision for months rather than a couple of weeks, ahead.

If you are planning to top up your income via the benefits system, keep in mind that once Universal Credit starts, your deemed income, as in the notional minimum income used to calculate what help you get on the benefits is likely to be the full time NMW, regardless of what you actually earn.

If you don't have any capital to invest, don't depend on the banks coughing up finance for you. Their attitude to being self employed is "show me the money!". Once they see the revenue and profits rolling in, they warm up considerably. But as a place to raise starting finance? Forget it!

You have to stay focused. Chitty chatting with your colleagues is a thing of the past. Long lunches? Sure, provided you don't mind catching up at 3am in the morning.

You have to do everything. This isn't like working for someone else, where you have a specific set of tasks to do and other people fill in the gaps. If you are self employed you (usually!) have to do everything yourself. that requires , imho, an immense amount of willpower and dsicipline.

A lot of being self employed is therefore grunt work. Not exciting or fun to do at all - just necessary, to keep your business going. For example:

    Doing the cash book
    Doing the banking
Hunting for work (no such thing as you do the work and someone else hunts for it, which is fairly typical in a lot of larger service organisitions)
Joining, and going to the relevant meetings, of various groups. Networking might sound fun, because you do get to meet some interesting people, but everyone is working out how to make a buck, including out of each other.
No team to do the work with. This could mean you get everything done in a quarter of the time it would take a larger firm, but it might not be as much fun as it would have been if you had been in that larger group doing it with a heap of other people

A concise and well written response

bedroom tax? no idea what that is
Caps on benefits? I think I am still going to get £71 a week
Less work available? No I think there is a lot of work available its if you can get it.
Taxes risen? I don't pay tax since I am not at work
Utility bills? Yes I guess and a good job the winter hasn't been to cold. Not put the gas fire on till later at night.
Workfare programmes mandatory? Not heard that and I am on the Work Programme.

If it was easy to be self employed we all would be. You need a trade first.
