i did my tax on line last jan and this month they have sent me an email to say they owe me money wanting address and bank details it is not in the spam how can i tell it is genuine

    It is quite likely to be spam, what is the email address that they want you to respond to? When you filled in your tax return did you not give them your bank details then? I've never heard of them asking for bank details by email if they weren't supplied, normally they would send a cheque, but I suppose they might be trying to cut costs.

    Edited to add: I've just noticed that this is in response to a return submitted last January, I would be very surprised if they have taken 11 months to decide they owe you money so I'd be even more suspicious now. I would suggest that you contact HMRC by phone and ask them if they do in fact owe you anything.

    You are right to do so.

    HMRC do not approach taxpayers by e-mail. You will get an acknowledgement e-mail if you submit certain forms online, and you can get VAT return reminders by e-mail for example, but requests for unpaid tax etc. will always come by post.
