Retirement Hamper

Hi
Not sure if this is the right place to post.

My Dad is retiring soon and I'd like to make him a hamper of some sort having been inspired by the hampers thread. It's around his birthday so it won't be a main present so it's more of a jokey thing and I'm looking for some ideas of things to put in.

He's into gardening but has pretty much everything he needs and doesn't really have many other hobbies. Did think of tickets to our local football club but want some little things to go with it.

Hope someone can help!

  • If you buy a book of display pockets from the pound shop, you could print out a variety of cartoons about retirement. There are loads on Google Images.

You could also include a travel mug, so your dad's coffee or tea keeps warm when he is gardening. There are some decent tins of biscuits around at the moment as well, you just need to avoid ones with Christmas designs.

If he doesn't already get one each week, how about a TV listings magazine for the week following his retirement, maybe with some post it notes pointing out any daytime programmes he might enjoy?

You could include a couple of puzzle books if you think he will enjoy them.

Another idea, and free, is to collect some leaflets about places your dad might want to visit. I know that he is likely to know his own area, but often there are places near home that people don't visit. Last year I took my kids to a science museum in the next town for the first time. It is less than fifteen minutes away, yet when we go out for the day we usually go further afield. The kids loved it, and it seemed so silly that we had never been before.

If you are able to meet up with your dad during the day, you could make vouchers to meet for a coffee, or a wander round the garden centre. If you are feeling creative, you could fold them into origami flowers :p as most other things I have suggested are quite flat in shape. Or you could write them onto cut out flower shapes.

You might be able to get tickets for a gardening or flower show if there is one close enough to where you live.
