Too much information???

hi there

I have a form to fill out for my new employers - it was emailed to me, I need to get it back to them with a utility bill ()

they are asking for all kinds on it, my NI no ( fair enough) my passport no? my mothers maiden name? addresses for the last 5 years?

All seems a bit much to me, and it does make me wonder- why do they want it- if they had my bank details, my mothers maiden name- a utility bill, previous addresses- someone could surely get hold of the access to my bank accounts.

Can i refuse to give all this- it does seem a bit much? ANyone know before I email them back??

Passport number would be due to the documentation required to assure you can work in the UK legally i suppose, although it is suggested that employers scan the passport ideally.

Utility bill for address verification - not required by law though

I see no reason for your mothers maiden name to be provided.

Could they be performing a credit check?

I dont know, why would they do that- I would however, be expecting to take credit card payments, would that be the reason?

It does seem a little unusual with the exception of passport and NI number.

They are asking for the information that banks etc ask for when applying for credit! I have never known an employer to ask for these things before and I've done a few jobs in my time.

Though saying that, I may have been asked for such details when I worked in a bank but it was soooo long ago, I can't remember

Instead of giving them your mother's maiden name, you could give them a different one. Presumably you're also giving them on your bank details for salary purposes? If it was me, I would provide them with a 'maiden name' that was different from my bank accounts.

well ive emailed the HR lady asking why the mothers maiden name & previous addresses are needed.

I had to have a credit check for my last job, and tbh im a bit worried about whether these 2 credit checks in 3 motnhs are going to affect my CR- its good at the mo, but I dont want this to make it worse- does that make sense?

But is it not the case that credit checks performed by employers are different from credit searches when applications for credit are made? I could be wrong, but I have always been under the impression that credit checks carried out by employers do not have an impact on your credit rating.

Mum's maiden name is a step too far in my view.
Have they asked for your maiden name?

Am I right thinking you work for an Estate Agent as a Sales Negotiator? Do they also employ Mortgage Advisors? From memory, when I was first employed as a trainee Mortgage Advisor, by an Estate Agent, these are exactly he questions they asked me. They had to do a credit check etc, all to do with FSA rules about being a fit and proper person for the job. Do you think they could be sending you the Mortgage Advisor form by mistake??

    no they havent

    but then Im a miss.

I do find this a bit invasive.I mean what difference does it make whether my mum is married or not in all fairness she might not be ( she is, hapily, but she might not have been in this day & age plenty of mothers dont get married.

Cazza, Im not working as an EA any more- but the job is within the industry.

the HR lady reckons everyone has to give this iinfo and "it remains confidential" NBot as confidential as me not telling them tho!
