staffordshire hoard

Options
We wish to go and see the Staffordshire Hoard so could do with some info from someone who knows it and the area. I understand it is visible in Stoke and Birmingham museums.............?

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel for some oldies, and which place is the best to see the hoard (parts of it I assume). Will be travelling by rail to need to be on good local transport links or short taxi rides.

Also we will need restaurants but not any for very spicy food (I would love it but some may well not!! ;)).

Obviously this depends upon which location we go to hence the reason for asking for somebody who knows the best place to visit.

Being local to the Potteries Museum I have seen the Hoard there and was fairly blown away by it. I am a bit of a geek when it comes to this type of stuff, I must admit.

If I was visiting the area I would stay somewhere out of the main city area in a place called Trentham, where I grew up!! There are a couple of hotels there and also Trentham Gardens is a real treat if you have any spare time. Check out trentham.co.uk.

Loads of hidden treasures around this area including all the famous pottery factory visitor centres and some lovely homes and gardens.

Thanks Inferno, that's really appreciated especially about the gardens as they would be of interest too!

  • Trentham gardens as well as obviously having gardens has a lovely shopping area and quite a few non spicy and good pubs / restaraunts nearby travel lodge yes in nearby as zzzLazyDaisy has mentioned but there is also a Premier Inn directly on the Trentham Gardens site .... and i would say its better to stay down that way than Hanley which although is what most people would think of as "Stoke on Trent city centre" I find Trentham much nicer (even though the Potteries museum is in Hanley)

And obviously we also have Alton Towers not too far (although definately a fair old bus ride away) if the excitment of the hoard isn't enough to get the adrenaline pumping !!!

To those who helped me with this trip, can I just say thank you!

It was great, the Hoard display magnificent and the Gladstone potteries museum very interesting - it's good that some of the heritage remains intact!

Premiere Inn at Trentham exceeded expectations and, even though it is a late season the gardens were well worth a visit. Staying at the Inn also gives a 2 for 1 offer on entry to the gardens midweek.

I had a bit of a preconceived idea, non too positive (!) from experience, regarding folk from the potteries and midlands but I will have to eat my words! All were friendly and pleasant and could not have been more helpful. Good on ya Stoke!

    Well worth the visit!
