    There is always a compromise.

Spend £250k for a 1 bed/studio pokey hole in London and spend 40+ mins on a tube commuting or spend £250k on a nice house with a garden, near the sea, and commute an hour overground into London?

We chose the latter and did it for 3 years from Southend. Loved living there and wouldn't live in London for any amount of money.

Loads of people in London had a massive mental block when it came to having to come in from far away but they often didn't realise the irony of them having to spend just as long commuting but since it was on the tube map it made it normal. Still, a 5 minute walk from the sea and a house 3-4 times the size of theirs often opened their eyes when they came to stay.

It's only natural that as London starts to price out everyone it will put an increased demand on other local places.

Born and bred in London so I am biased, live in zone 2 nice house 40 minutes in to Liverpool Street and that includes the 10 to 15 minute walk to the station. Also lots of things to do in winter :)

Don;t dismiss what can be done rurally in winter.

I once saw a documentary where a Scandinavian woman was asked what they did in their spare time.
She answered "Vell, in the summer time, ve go fishing and have sex"
To which the presenter asked what they did in the wintertime and she answered with a smile.
"Vell, there's not so much fishing done ;)"

Again, something fine for the young and virile, but not such good advice for those with arthritic hips, restricted lung capacity, and brewers' droop.
No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

Now now, let's not tarnish all people of age as being unvirile and decrepit.

I read somewhere ages ago that estate agents used to talk about the 100 minute limit. If you had to commute 100 or more minutes each way, within a couple of years you'd be looking for a new job or a new house.

I moved sideways and took a more local job after commuting in heavy London traffic for hours each day. Not worth it. I listened to audiobooks and got thorugh tons. Still think it's a rubbish way to live

Had a fellow working for me who commuted from Leicester to central Surrey. Lasted six months before asking for a reference to look elsewhere. Couldn't blame him. Three hour drive each way.

indeed. You can put up with it for a bit whilst the money is fresh in your reasoning, but soon you'll evaluate life and add up the hours/days/weeks you're wasting away needlessly and look locally or move! Pity more companies don't have the bottle to promote home working!
  • I live in Southend. I also work in Southend for HMRC, but wouldn't consider commuting 5 days a week at my age (mid 40s). I did it when in my 20s without any bother, but I value my time now. The only way I'd do it now is maybe twice a week and the rest of the days to be working from home, but that's only if I saw the right job. For now I love living and working locally.
However I know there are so many people who commute into London, particularly into the City of London, which is right on our doorstep and surrounds Fenchurch Street. Takes 50 mins and is a great little route.
I'd never live in London, I love living by the seaside, Southend now has a good little international airport, and we're just a 5 minute drive from some lovely countryside.
