...while providing an open door policy for immigrants we can't cope with.
I'm not sure if this is a UK issue per-se. All I do know is people are currently in France, in tents, waiting to get the to UK. The french won't entertain them, so I'm not sure why we will. Maybe our generous welfare state is the real issue and not the EU?

I suspect there is another reason as well - most (if not all) other countries teach English as a second language, not French/German/.Italian/etc. Therefore to stand a chance of being able to understand people in a country to which they choose to migrate, choosing one where most people speak English is probably a better bet than one which doesn't.

True. But Australia, New Zealand etc don't seem to have the same issues.

Do Ireland have the same issues? I dunno - literally because I've never heard of it being a problem in Ireland. If they don't have the same issues, then certainly it would have to be put down to something unique about the UK.

I was meaning why there appears to be more internal European immigration to the UK rather than other EU countries, not immigration outside Europe.

Oz, NZ, etc don't have EU rules to follow, also it's somewhat further to go.

I suspect that's at least partly because to get to Ireland from mainland Europe, the easiest way is via the UK.

There appears to be because the Daily Fail and the UKIP muppets stoke baseless fears in the general population about the UK being over-run with immigrants.

    Whereas reality is completely different.

The UK is nowhere near the top of the list in Europe in terms of foreign citizens as a percentage of the total population.

But in terms of actual numbers rather than as the proportion of population, the UK is 3rd behind only Germany and Spain.

Much as you'd expect from one of the larger countries and top economies in Europe.

But actual numbers are a bit meaningless in terms of judging impact aren't they?

After all 100 immigrants moving into a village of 100 people would certainly be noticed.... While 100 immigrants in a society of 100 million would be utterly inconsequential.

We're always told by the [STRIKE]racists[/STRIKE] sorry, "people concerned about the impacts of immigration" ( :rotfl: ) that we have uncontrolled immigration and that the UK is a mecca for immigrants, attracting far more than our fair share.

    Except that's really b0ll0cks though isn't it?

That chart proves we attract pretty much exactly our fair share on a per capita basis.

Net migration is also a good one to look at:

    Who's got the highest figures?

    And so is total immigrants....

Hiding behind percentages is OK Hamish, but this says it all.....
