Who or what was described by The Economist magazine as The Timebomb at the Heart of Europe to the chagrin of many?

For today's track we go back to late-80s Manchester:

The article definitely produced some sour grapes.

Indeed not but it rather gives away the answer to the question. Perhaps a quick edit might be possible.

    Dearest Sir Generali,

I've noticed that occasionally you take requests. I've just heard that the wonderful singer Fontella Bass has died. Perhaps Rescue Me will be an appropriate title for one of your quiz questions? Even if the lyrics have a different sentiment to an economic one.

    With thanks.

Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

No worries and thanks for editing. Sour grapes were much in evidence as you say.

Actually Rescue Me is the perfect song for the 6th day of Xmas as it's all about bailout packages.

Ms Bass also appeared on another favourite of mine called 'All that you Give' which might end the bailout story.
