Ok great cause no doubt, but why January? I mean most people will be able to give up drink in January be it due to having to wait right until the end of the month to get paid again or because there is nothing to celebrate. The best month would have been December challenge yourself to not drink over xmas and new years when the rest of the country is out at office parties etc. January is just too easy! Sorry not drinking in January is about as much of an achievement as not wearing black socks.

Well does it matter when it's raising money for a good cause like cancer research?? I don't know why January but that's when they've decided to run it. And also how can you judge what is an achievement to different people....something one person finds difficult might be super easy to another person and vice versa.

On top of that, it's a nice healthy way to start the new year!! Why be so negative??

If it's so easy, I hope you are doing it then and raising copious amounts of cash?

Well the first Friday completed with no problems! Made especially easy by the fact that I fell asleep at about 9 watching TV and just woke up to go to bed! First donations have made £15 so hopefully that will continue! Good luck everyone for the weekend!

It was interesting to see a news report saying this can be counter productive for health. I have done it (for three months) for some years now and it probably helps that we are not heavy drinkers. December does seem to reach a crescendo for dh especially with functions every day, and so January for us is partly recuperative and partly because, again, for dh and not me these days, January still seems to be people not giving up yet. E.g. Dh has had six lunches, drinks or suppers this week related to work plus one social night. As a lighter drinker anyway I have to say no one has ever pressured him into a social drink at a function (he tends to have a 'drink' then water at drinks functions, and wine as appropriate with meals and water).

    For me it's easy.
  • I'm not sure how seriously to take that report anyway! Clearly a poor news day and like you said, for lighter drinkers anyway its less of a difference! 12 days down, hope everyones doing well!

day 13 of the dryathalon challenge so creeping up to half way now.... have found the challenge ok - probably something to do with hiding all the booze under the stairs so I'm not getting home from work and seeing booze on the counter calling drink me drink me :rotfl:

Probably found last night the hardest as was out for a meal. Quite happy with my J20s but after drinking two - really didn't fancy another and the food was delayed so watched with envy as my dinner guests drank their wine but didn't want to cave in or pay the golden pass fine or let the people down who have sponsored me/promised sponsorship so remained :A

    Water?

I Used to drink sparkling water as my 'Wine equivalent'. I cannot drink sparkling any more but will sometimes choose a nice mineral water (aqua di panna is my favourite atm)
  • I'm going one better.... I took up the challenge set my M&S Resolutions on FB and not drinking alcohol until the birth of Kate Middleton's baby!
