I'm not sure if this is the right board to put this on....

I am planning on completing a Dry-athlon in January. This means no alcohol for the entire month of January....I am doing this to raise money for Cancer Research.

But I figure not only will it help me save money (soft drinks are cheaper!) and potentially lose weight, it will also help a good cause.

So is anyone with me???

To officially sign up visit www.dryathlon.org.uk, or if you just fancy trying to give up alcohol for a month then join me! And we will stop drinking at midnight on NYE together!!!

I started thinking about doing this awhile ago (not so much to raise money, but more to save my own money and health).

I think the tipping point was when I started keeping a 'drinking diary' on the Drink aware website (An excellent site with great tools!) and was regularly hitting 25 units on a weekday, let alone the weekend binges.

Ive been slowly trying to cut back this past month, trying to replace normal booze with those alcohol-free bottled beers. Ive found the Becks Blue to be my favorite and tastes great.

Think i'm now all geared up for Janurary. Going to be tough though considering my hallway currently looks like:

    and cupboard:

    Best of luck! :)
  • My cupboards look very similar post Christmas!! Good luck to you as well, keep me updated on your progress throughout January!

The hardest bit for me will be stopping at midnight on NYE! And not having a glass of wine after dinner - I probably have a drink 4 days out of 7 normally!

Im the same, more of a 'casual' drinker at home rather then going out into town and getting hammered. The problem is drinking 5 of those double JDs + coke while watching tv in the evenings with the other-half.
  • I saw this on a billboard near where I work and thought about doing it, not officially but just for my own health drive in January much like Reue.

My house is currently full of Guinness, Wine, Jagermeister and JD, but in three days time I'll be stuffing it all in a cupboard to be ignored for a month!

Good to know others have been planning on the same! I'm much the same as you two, in that it's the drinks to unwind in the evening I'd miss rather than getting ruined at the weekend, but hey I'm sure my wallet and waistline will thank me for it!

I'm signed up for this. Getting nervous now as the 1st Jan approaches but looking forward to the challenge :j I'm having friends round tonight and I've just been eyeing up the rose that has been chilling in the fridge. That won't be happening next week :rotfl: I'll be eyeing up the diet lemonade instead :rotfl:
  • Flat Eric - I've had a couple of ciders tonight! Making the most of it before Tuesday.

guesswho2000 - they definitely will, that's two of the reasons right there why I am doing it!

Glad to see a few people getting on board....hopefully we will help each other with motivation along the way, as the full 31 days will be tough I reckon!

There is one thing about the dryathalon challenge that I have been wondering/debating with myself - hopefully, you will be able to help?

In short - should we avoid cooking with alcohol for the duration of the challenge? I say this because before the year is out, I shall be probably be cooking a casserole/chilli or something similar. Usually I add a tot or two of wine or beer sometimes if its a casserole. Now during the challenge, I will avoid doing this but if I cook something before the 1st Jan but which gets frozen and it contains alcohol and I eat it during the month of January then strictly speaking is that cheating ?

I don't often cook with alcohol, but I wouldn't class that as cheating. I'm only classing it as actual drinks, like a glass of wine, whiskey, pint of beer, or suchlike!

One of my friends has signed up for this I think it's a great idea, but as I hardly ever drink & my birthday is in January, I won't be joining in. Any other month and I'd probably not have a drink anyway!
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

I'll sign up for this and it shouldn't be too much of a problem for me as I can manage a month of no alcohol no problems, It matches up with just what I was thinking this afternoon! To not have any alcohol in Jan - so off I go as soon as its the 1st Jan

    Good luck one and all!
