Are night time moisturisers necessary?

Options
I was wondering about this. I don't apply anything to my skin before going to bed but I keep reading and hearing that whilst we're asleep (at night for most of us) our skin is repairing itself so it's important we moisturise it and let the nutrients from the cream sink in or give it extra protection

Now, my skin is combination: oily t-zone but dry everywhere else so I have to moisturise during the day. However I've discovered that its during the late night trips to the bathroom and I glance in the mirror, my skin is looking positively its best! Smoother, no flakiness and eveness in tone. If that is my skin during its repair state do I really need to do anything more to it?

I guess it depends on your skin type as everyone's needs are different, but is it also true that during sleeping is the only time our skin gets to properly relax and breathe without all that make-up and stuff we like to apply on top of it during the day.

Any thoughts anyone? By the way, thanks to everyone who posted all the useful information about the chemicals in our skin creams. It has given me plenty to think about!

Hi Dr Hauschca does not recommend any night time creams etc, he thinks the skin needs time to rebalance out. I have tried this after years of clarins use and it works really well.

I tend to use something like Elemis Active Skin Complex, which according to the hype 'promotes skin regeneration' All I know, is that my skin feels like velvet in the morning after I have used it.
I used to use Decleor aromessence rose d'orient night balm but it was a bit too heavy as I too have combination skin
It really depends what suits you though, if your skin doesn't seem to be dry or 'grey' and tired looking when you get up then you are doing right to go au-naturel during the night :)

Thank you. It's a shame my skin doesn't look as good naturally during the day than it does at night and I could then save a small fortune on moisturiser and foundation! :)

At night, your skin gets a break from UV rays, so it can concentrate on rebuilding and regenerating. And it needs moisture to do that - hence the emphasis on using a good night cream which will provide that essential moisture. So it’s not just marketing fluff - there is a genuinely good reason behind using one. I always use something at night.
