Help !!! I put the turkey in the oven this morning about 7ish, went to check it 30mins ago and the oven is cold. Oven was fine when I put it in, but looks like the heating element has gone. Arghhhh.

So we can go and stick it in my neighbours oven, but it's probably been cooked for about 45mins to 1 hour (guessing) then cooled down for maybe another hour. Do you reckon it would be safe to eat once thoroughly cooked?

Thanks
mto

Are you sure the timer button hasn't been pressed somehow and switched the oven off? I'm sure it'll be fine if cooked thoroughly in the neighbour's oven. I sympathise - last year my oven melted black plastic stuff all over the roast veg and we had to throw the lot out; fortunately I'd cooked the meat the night before.

It should be fine, if you have access to a meat thermometer, make sure the thickest part of the breast reaches 65C.

It will be safe to eat.....as long as it's hot through.

Right, turkey is now in neighbours oven ... they're off for Xmas dinner at relatives so have kindly let us use their kitchen.

Have decided to cook it for the full time as we don't know how long the oven was actually on for, will probably end up a bit dry but that's what gravy is for :D Unfortunately don't have a meat thermometer so just gonna have to take the risk.

We tried everything with the oven, dug the manual out and everything. Annoying thing is the light's working and the grill and fan, just not the heating element.

Of all the days in the year for it to happen!

No need to overcook it - check it is hot through by sticking a knife in the thickest part, them feeling the knife. It should feel very hot. Also, ensure that the juices running from the bird are clear and not tinged pink or red. Not everyone has a meat thermometer, but these are 'old style' tests that predated them :)
