in Cutting tax
I have paid too much tax in the last tax year so i shall write to request a refund once my P60 has arrived. I just wondered if people who had done this in the past could give me some guidance as to what to include in the letter?
Also i am hoping to request that my tax allowance be shared between my two jobs so i wondered how i should go about asking that in the letter.
I appreciate any advice

Just call your tax office by phone. Based on your NI number, they will have all your info to hand.
Just wait a wee while until they have all your year end info to hand.
All your taxable income and allowances for the year are aggregated anyway.
I called and got a four figure refund last year.Today is the first day of the rest of your life0 -

Send a letter to the tax office giving them details of your full employment history since 06 April 2006 and send your 2006-2007 p60 when you receive it, if you have claimed jsa/taxable ib etc, this info should also be included along with any info that may be helpful ie p45's/wage slips etc. With regard to splitting your tax allowances, provide the full name and head office address of each employer, along with your tax reference numbers, provide the date each job started, your works number and your average weekly/monthly income from each job. Request that you wish your tax allowance splitting between the two jobs (I am assuming that your are not liable to tax on one of your jobs).0 -
I have never managed to get my tax office to do anything regarding 2 jobs or refunds without a letter being sent to them. They will not do anything over the phone for me.0

Ah well sorry to hear that. Letter it is then.
Are you a higher rate tax payer? Do you earn more than say £40K per year? Do you pay pension contributions? Do you make any gift aid payments?Today is the first day of the rest of your life0 -
No to all those questions.
I'm on a BR tax code for my main job and a 503L tax code for a job i only do during uni vacations and hardly very much at all. So basically i am paying loads and loads of tax on my main job income even though it's so badly paid. I have been taxed £210 in this month's pay packet which seems a lot to me.
I was thinking splitting my tax allowance shall help as in the main job i will perhaps earn just my tax allowance over the year. in my other job i wont be getting very regular earnings at all so would rather pay they tax on those earnings as and when they come in.0 -

Hey there
The tax office should of allocated your personal allowance (code 503L) to your main job. Your second holiday job should be on BR as your not earning as much. Give your local office a ring quoting your NI number and they should be able to help you with this.
Good Luck!0 -

Thank you everyone who replied. I called today and woman was really nice and helpful and said she would do exactly that- change my main job to 503L and my occasional one to BR.
Does anyone know what will happen regarding the tax i paid while i was on the BR code, it's about £300 in total for April. Will i receive it back or have to wait until the end of the tax year?0 -

It will be treated as part of the tax you are due to pay this year. So you'll pay less tax over the rest of the year.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac
