Copy Tax Notification

Options
I need to provide proof of identity to open a First Direct account and they will accept the following but they need to be less than three months old, the ones I have are older

- PAYE Coding Notice
- HMRC Tax Calculation

I've tried to find where I can request a copy on the HMRC site but failed, I have seen comments to the effect that the taxman no longer re-issues these just for authentication purposes but I live in hope

Does anyone know where I can do this on the HMRC site?

As a last resort I'll give them a ring but I've had frustrating and expensive experience of this before

Many Thanks

Do you complete tax returns on the web? you should be able to print off a copy of the tax calculation for the last tax return you have completed

If you don't, phone HMRC ask for a copy of the notice of coding to be sent to you.

There is nowhere on the web to request a notice of coding.

If you are going to ring HMRC and request a notice of coding DO NOT tell them it is for proof of identity to open a bank account. They are instructed that a notice of coding is not an identity document and so will not issue it. Tell them it's for your own records or something.

BTW the banks have been told not to tell their potential customers to request such documents however they do still list them along with other examples of proof of identity. What else have they told you they will accept?

    - Suso I do submit a SA but they want originals
    - Pam17 thanks for the heads up

    They will accept:-

Copy of a full and valid passport certified by a lawyer or attorney
Copy of a full and current UK driving licence certified by a lawyer or attorney

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) tax notification. For example:
    - PAYE Coding Notice
    - HMRC Notification of Working Family Tax Credit
    - HMRC Notification of Children's Tax Credit
    - HMRC Notification of Disabled Persons Tax Credit
    - HMRC Tax Calculation

    Disabled parking document
    Firearms/shotgun certificate

Benefits Agency / Local Authority letter confirming your right to benefits from the following departments:
    - Benefits Agency
    - Department of Work and Pensions (including Jobcentre Plus)
    - Child Benefit Office
    - Veterans Agency

I don't drive, get benefits, tax credits or plan to shoot anything (yet) which pretty much means a coding notification, tax calculation or passport. My passport is Irish as an added complication

I'm going to try and visit my local(!) tax office and see if they can print something off for me, failing that try to find a solicitor that doesn't charge a kings ransom

Many thanks for the replies, if anyone else has any suggestions ...

Since they specify a UK driving licence but not a UK passport, I wouldn't have thought your 'foreign' passport was a problem. Also note that you can probably get a commissioner for oaths to certify it cheaper than a bog standard solicitor, unless you have a friendly one who won't charge. (We used to have a qualified but non-practising solicitor on staff at work, which was handy!)

    A quick update chaps

I failed to get a solicitor to certify my passport, all the ones I tried need you to be a previous client of theirs, the only one who would wanted £5 per page to photocopy it but would 'do a deal' for £80

I phoned HMRC self assessment using the 'overseas' number suggested by SayNoTo0870 - 0161 931 9070 - but prefixed it with 141 otherwise they will reject the call

I got through in 20 seconds and they will be sending a copy coding notification in a week or two

So an excellent result but what a palaver
