Many people I know were brought up in shared houses (because they lived in flats). Nothing wrong with that at all (or with children sharing bedrooms). Probably healthier than the lone family living that seems to be regarded as a necessity today.

Could this also be due to the increase in ethnic minority communities who more readily practice multi generational sharing?
Between 2001 and 2011 the Muslim population of the UK rose from 1.5 million to 2.7 million, an increase from 3 percent to 4.8 percent of the overall population. I know the stats in the original post have a much shorter recent timespan but on average there has been an increase of about 120,000 new muslims per year. I expect other faiths or ethnicities also practice intergenerational living as the norm.
In my city, the only residents in the streets where I live that have 2 or 3 generations of family in them appear to be from the Pakistani Muslim population, some flats seem to be split by gender lines, too.
Of course, the economic doldrums don't help - its clear on the housing and benefit forum that people are hitting hard times and are moving back to their parents, or their parents are infirm so they move in together.0 -
1 million lodgers in 20 million homes sounds very extreme...I don't know a single one to be honest...I never hear of anyone talking about them....maybe this is one huge tax dodge by our island of fiddlers as you can claim a good £5,000 on your tax form.
What I do know is theres a boat load of 3 bedroom semis with only 1 or 2 people in them...maybe the housing shortage is also down to organisation .
We were building 250,000 homes just a few years ago....so why not just build them in all these regions where the prices are going up...sell them no bother..;)0 -

Yes, some of us predicted this a while ago. As Landlords and letting agencies get greedier charging high rents and other fees people look for alternatives. Ah yes, of course, well that explains it.
Probably a good thing too.
Because if it wasn't for those "greedy rents" forcing people to share houses, we'd have nearly 1.5 million people wandering the streets homeless, as there simply wouldn't be enough houses for everyone that wants one.
Or..... is it more likely the other way around....
