Anyone wanting even a relatively complex will should beware. I used the charity free wills service, but after an hour's interview was asked to return the next day as the (obviously very inexperienced) solicitor I saw wasn't able to cope with setting up a trust. I was quoted £800 for my will, and charged £350 for the work already done, so I am now £350 poorer and still no will!

I rang the National Union of Teachers' Eastern Office, and they said they didn't but they did have a scheme where you could have 30 minutes free legal advice. I am surprised they don't offer a wills scheme when so many other unions do.

It is good to see that this site is highlighting a positive benefit offered by the vast majority of Trade Unions to its members.

It is unfortunate that in Martin's money saving book, one of the first examples given on cutting your outgoings was to cancel your TU membership.

Given the many benefits Martin's site provided, this short-sitedness is unfortunate. Trade Unions not only provide members with comprehendive legal support, if required but work daily to maintain and improve the most basic of rights for workers. If Martin suggested all his members join a Trade Union, the benefits to individuals and our working population would well outweigh the cost.

Don't think this has been posted before so here goes!

I've been thinking of getting a will drawn up for some years now but never bothered due to hassle and expense (around £70 I believe).

Then my union the CWU (Communications Workers Union) told me of their free will writing service.

Drop an email to freewills@cwu.org requesting a pack quote your membership number and address details and they pop it in the post.

The pack asks all the vital questions and you post it to one of their lawyers to prepare the will free of charge! They do ask to be made executors but it isn't compulsory.

They'll also do one for your partner free of charge.

They do state that if it's a complicated will they will charge but at a reduced rate!

If you're a member of a different union it may be worthwile checking out if they have a similar scheme.
