Help getting a website built

Options
Hi, I am taking the plunge and hauling myself into the 21st century by setting up a website.
Does anyone know how much I should be paying for a youtube type site but much smaller. Initially I thought that I would have a go myself but it's way beyond my scope.

I have come across a site that lets you post your requirments on it and web developers then bid to provide your site. Youtube type sites seem to be being built for about $1500.

Has anyone come across this? I guess that it is webdevelopers from across the globe hence the competetive bids.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

you can get a youtube script much cheaPER THAN $1500
  • I think that my ignorance in web design may cost me on this.
  • I don't think that the site would cost that much. You probably will face quite high costs for hosting though because, as Im sure you know, video files are rather large. I think it may be worth posting on the Techie thread as you may get more replies
    :D
  • Thanks I'll do that
  • For a YouTube type site, I'm assuming your requirements as a minimum are:
    - user accounts
    - allow users to upload their own videos
    - allow users to comment on videos
    - stream videos through the site

You're going to have some problems dealing with the video uploads - YouTube re-encodes every video that is uploaded into a format best suited for streaming. Unless you're planning to run a dedicated server, it's unlikely you'll be able to use server-side software to do this.

Bandwidth is also going to be a problem as streaming video is going to cost quite a lot to maintain on a busy site.

If, on the other hand, you're just looking to create a site that hosts YouTube videos (i.e. displays videos uploaded to YouTube) then your costs will be much lower.

    Hope that's of some use.
