I always used to buy King Edwards but in the last five years or so I've found that they literally fall to pieces when you boil them, even if you do it on a very low heat. A friend who used to be a farmer tells me that they're no longer stored properly and that's the problem. I now buy either Maris Piper or Desiree.0

I'd say they were the best potatoes for roasting.
But haven't had them for a while, so don't know if they've gone downhill or not...0 -
I think you'll find that everyone has a personal favourite that varies. I prefer Desiree (As does Delia) or Maris Piper but others do prefer King Edwards. This Guardian article is interesting: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2009/dec/17/best-roast-potato-recipe0

They may still be OK for roasting if you put them in the tin 'raw' like my mum did (and I used to), but I now boil them first to 'get them going' so I think Maris are better for that.0

I find King Edwards make the best roast potatoes, really crispy on the outside. I dont par boil them in cold water (IYKWIM) I start off with boiling water and they dont fall apart so easily.0

Interesting article but I think they all looked a bit anaemic in the photographs, except for Hugh's.0 -

Thank you for this! I thought it was just me, they always seem to disintegrate in the water. Will have some safer ones for chrimbo food now i thinkSmokefree since 27-9-20070 -
I use Maris Pipers, King Edwards or Desiree for roasting, and they all taste yummy!! I agree with the King Edwards falling apart - I boil them for maybe 2 minutes, and that's with the heat turned down as soon as they start boiling. I learned the hard way with that one!:rotfl:marlasinger0
