Well done 1274 I agree with you on the savings front I would rather see a low mortgage balance than have savings paid at a lowe rate as you can always borrow it back

SFG that does sound like you are having a rough time of it. Hopefully someone will buy your have as Ali said as long as it is priced right it has a chance.

I went on conference on the Embankment in London yesterday and we went for a drink afterwards. Well it was just about 4.30pm and everywhere was buzzing with people. We walked from Covent Garden to Waterloo Station and all the restaurants and bar where busy at 6.30pm. I could not see much proof of a credit crunch there but then again London is always a bit different.

I am selling a bit on Ebay making about £4 profit on each candle I bought for £1 two year ago in Denmark. Match betting is also quite good, lots of no loose offers and I even made a £84 profit on one of them as Real Madrid scored first last night. I would still recomend it to anyone who fancy making a bit of cash it is not that difficult once you get the hand of it. Saying that without my mentor Tim I would not have started.

It's just under a year since I joined MSE and MFIT so I thought I'd provide you all with an update. In 12 months I have managed to pay £95K off my mortgage:j and am pushing for a £100K overpayment (which would take the outstanding balance down to £25K by our next update in Jan. Although my borrowing is cheap now (3.79%), my savings rates are all much lower so I'm not at all sorry I've emptied my savings into mortgage OPs. I can always get them back if I need to. I'm actually beginning to dream about clearing the whole lot by April 2010. Wouldn't that be fab:j

SFG - sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope things pick up for you soon.hug.gif
  • Thanks everyone - your comments and encouragement are what I needed. This year has been a REALLY bad one, so next year can only be better, right?

Ailuro2 - thanks for the info on Dundee - I can honestly say I knew some of that as my best friend studied medicine in Dundee and I think my son and I were up there almost every weekend. We even had our eye on a house in the Ferry just in case DS got the job! My grandkids always give me such a wild & warm welcome, I couldn't bear not being able to pop in like I currently do - and they never want me to leave. I think they're what's helped keep me going BIG style! I hope things will be ok at the factory for you.

TG Thanks to you too - we've changed estate agents and dropped the offers over price by £20K which means we'll have to withdraw the offer me made on a semi-bungalow, but, as my Papa always used to say, what's for you won't go past you!

setmefree2 - thanks for the hug - and I really like the emoticon you did for 1274, it made me smile.

    Thanks again everyone xx

  • Hi guys, just a quick hello......

SFG sorry to hear about your troubles, hope things pick up for you.

1274 well done on hammering down your mortgage :)

I scrapped my car a few weeks ago and boy has it made a difference to my outgoings! Not only am I saving on car expenditure but unless I can fit my shopping into my cycle panniers, I don't buy it! I went to Aldi yesteday and managed to get my shopping for the week for just over £25! That included a turkey crown! Not buying cr*p either so healthy all round.

The good news is I can afford to pay off £1k this month bringing my balance to £15,500! yay! I hope to pay off at least £500 by December payday so hope to end the year at £15k (I'll pay more if I can).

Also I have been squirrelling away money for xmas so that should take the pressure off food spending for me. Every week I've been buying bits and have a box with a xmas cake, pud, cranberry sauce, 3 bottles of organic cider ;) and a tin of chestnut puree for the stuffing so I don't need much. Pressies are bought cheap over the year and are now wrapped up so I can sit back and relax!

Hope everyone is doing ok and looking forward to the next update :)

    Hi there all!
SFG, I didn't wish to make light of anyone's problems at all. I'm ever so sorry if it came across that way. My Father and my Brother in Law have both been made redundant in the last couple of months. BiL last week. He's got until new years eve which is my nephews 2nd birthday.
I always try to think positively. I'm (only) 30 but have seen a lot of !!!!!! in my life. I've experienced an awful lot and I've seen a huge amount through work. Eventually I think that it will all come out in the wash. DH and I have had a couple of good years. Maybe 3.5 since we moved into this house. Before then we had a load of bum years. We've been together 11 years and have had job losses and other parp to deal with.
I think that we will all have down times in our lives. I don't think we will only ever meet with one. We will all meet with heart ache and heart break. The one thing that we are doing by overpaying our mortgages is future protecting ourselves and saving ourselves a little from what influence the banks have over our dail lives.

Hey Kaz, I didn't take it that way at all - really. It was just I was thinking how "worse it could be" at the time as I had been feeling so miserable lately. I've had some slightly better days, in my grand scheme of things, since my "rant" above - especially yesterday when I went to a Kleeneze workshop in the afternoon and the Christmas Party in the evening, where a few people made quite a fuss of me. That was touching and uplifting at the same time, and being plied with lots of drinks didn't hurt either!!

  • Good afternoon all,

Hope everyone is well and ready for Christmas.

We managed to get most of the present shopping out of the way yesterday, it gets harder to buy presents for the kids the older they get.

Anyway spent a while this morning counting out the whiskey jar and the mortgage Pikachu. I managed to bank £95 from the whiskey jar and £170 from the Pikachu. Looking forward to sending a cheque in the new year with a further overpayment.

Good luck with the challenge, its great to see more green on the chart as we get nearer the end, I just hope I can reach my goal before April 2010.
