How do you access your mortgage balance online, please? They've told me I can't, in fact they've paid me £20 compensation so far to apologise for telling me twice I could see it on line, and then admitting both times they were wrong!

    Hi TTBG,

We go to online banking on Barclays web site. Enter user name, then membership number , then 5 digit pin type code then password. When our Woolwich a/c passed to Barclays we were given access straight away...as far as I know this was true for everyone. There were alot of threads about it on MSE because some old Woolwich customers were upset that they could only see their balance and not the detail...now I log in a couple of times a week so I can tell whether the movements are interest, payents, etc.

Not sure why you wouldn't have this. Do you have an old Woolwich a/c?

    Hi,

I'm sure you'll make a packet and have a lovely house to live in as well:D Must have been abit scary signing the papers though. The day I woke up owing £250k I felt terrified :eek:and have been trying to rid myself of the feeling ever since. It was that feeling that if one of us lost our jobs we would be out on the streets - literally. However, we'd be all right now ( I think). How does it go - nothing ventured nothing gained and all that. I have a Woolwich/Barclays mortgage too - a flexible tracker. Did you know you can access the balance on line any time you want?

    All the Best

Yes - going from a mortgage of £154k (which was down to £85k) of our old house to a mortgage of £467k for the current house was scary. But it was a calculated risk. If you read the book "Millionaire Next Door" you will see the behaviour that I follow; good offence (income) and good defence (frugal spending). That way I can pay my mortgage, save into ISA, pension and not have to rely on my pay from month to month.

I will sign up to on-line access with Barclays for the mortgage - thanks.

    Hi SMF2

Yep, I can log on to Barclays personal banking, I can see the bizarre 'mortgage reserve account' which I don't touch with a barge pole, but can't see the Woolwich mortgage. It's a Woolwich account number which throws them whenever I make an overpayment in person. They've told me only Offset accounts can be seen online - they tell everyone different info, 'divide and conquer' should be their motto!

Amazamum - About £2150 interest only
Looking to get closer to £2000 next month and I am going to remortgage in August.
Sooner I am shot of the mortgage balance the better, as it is what wakes up at 6am Mon-Friday to get to work and away from my family till 7pm. If I can pay it off in 10 years I can enjoy more time with the family.

I'm glad I'm not the one paying your mortgage, that + about a 1000 more is the interest that comes off my mortgage for the whole year.
Good luck in reaching your goal, you sound determined.

  • I'm trying to pay off £1k per month off the capital (plus interest) on mine but I need to find some extra money as there are 25 months left and I owe £28500!

I've decided to cut my grocery bill down to the bone (Feb challengee) and save an extra £250 into the high interest (12%) A&L account that I opened up via Quidco. Over the year I should have £3k plus interest which I'll whack onto the mortgage. Every little helps including the interest rates coming down this week, stoozing, quidco-ing, pigsbacking, mystery shopping, extra hours when they come up and another job! I've started invigilating at my kids school and don't include the money earned in the budget so it all goes into the pot.

I know it may seem extreme to some but I have never felt that my finances have been so good (especially at this time of year). Even though I am usually on the ball with money. It seems as if this goal has got me focussed and I am challenging myself to have as many no spend days as I can this month.

That said we have still treated ourselves to 4 hols this year but they are MSE holidays! I take my own food and think up ways to entertain ourselves on the cheap, everyone loves it as we mainly have a rest and some quality time together away from the rat race so its a win-win thing.

Keep up the good work everyone!

  • Grr, these new signature rules are really annoying, I've had to lose my Pension challenge (well this isn't such a loss as my pension seems to be going backwards at the moment!), lose my offset account figures and I've had to combine my 2 repayment mortgages into one amount.

Oh well, I dare say I'll get used to it. My mortgage amount has gone up quite a bit though now I'm not counting the offset figures :(
