Making items from NotOnTheHighstreet?

Hi

I love some of the things on that site, but very expensive. Has anyone tried making any of it cheaper? Or any ideas how to go about them?

I like the typography things, can you get them anywhere to print, then frame?

Thanks!
Up and onwards to the future!

  • I'm also planning to make something which I saw on the site. It was a butterfly picture made of buttons. Given that I have a massive button box I can't think of a better way to use the really pretty ones.

I'm off on holiday for a few weeks so won't be starting until after New Year however will update on progress. Warning - it may be slow:o

  • I made a love heart picture that was made of buttons that I had seen on the site. Was real easy to do and cost a fraction of the price

  • Hi Ladies,
Please be careful of advertising that you are "copying" stuff that other people have made or designed. You leave yourself open for copyright infringement.
On another forum I go on a women had advertised that she saved loads on wedding invites by making them herself and copying a design, someone reported it to the designer and she was threatened with legal action.

    happy crafting :)

I'm only planning to make something for my own use not to sell so I'll happily take the risk.

Taking inspiration from an idea is one thing, makining a direct copy is another.

But to be fair there are lots and lots of items on NOTHs that aren't remotely original and can be found in many places.

If you can be specific about exactly what you would like to make then people can recommend free resources and tutorials to make your own, but if you ask how can I reproduce xyz that's not fair on the designer whose work you are stealing.

Also I think it should be noted there is also a difference between learning a technique or skill and copying someone else's design.

Re. typography, there are some free printables out there, but a lot of the charm of typography is in the individual designers skill and if you're not artistic trying to reproduce it can just look like a child's attempt (well for me anyway)! :o

I have a few Pinterest boards that might give people some inspiration or have useful tutorials though depending on what you like: http://pinterest.com/kitschkitty/crafts-crafters-drawing-digital-design-inspiration/

A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
  • Thanks! I love Pinterest- but it takes up hours and hours! I don't intend to sell anything, I just don't have the money for those NOTH things, and I seen a few similar things on the craft boards.
Can you give me a link to the templates? I was looking for something like Wordle, which lets you make word cloud templates to print and frame!
Any gift ideas like on the Festive Fivers board, but not festive, too? :)

I liked some of the 'happily married' signs on not on the high street so I made my own version:

There is a reason why the items on there are 'expensive'. The person making the items has had to have the idea, plan it out, source materials, spend time making it and so forth. The end product is the sum of all these things, and sometimes it can take hours to create a piece, the artists are only trying to get a fair payment for the work they are putting in.
