Student loan passed to collections agency

Options
Hello all,

In 2008/2009 I completed a full year at university but decided to switch to another and restarted my first year again. I filled out a form withdrawing and moved to my new one, completing this course in summer just gone.

I had a letter over the summer of 2009 claiming I had been overpaid by £630 (grant overpayment from not completing the year I believe) whilst I was still struggling setting up my new claim, so I phoned up the student loans company and told then that I had completed the whole year and was told that was that. I did not keep the original letter and did not make any notes at the time.

In April 2012 I received a letter from Smith Lawson & Company who are a part of Student Loans Company giving me a 'final warning' for my overpayment. This is the first I'd heard of the overpayment since 2009. I sent a letter asking for details of the debt and copies of all correspondences - I only sent it standard delivery however I also sent a copy by email so I can at least show that it has been sent. I hadn't heard anything since.

Today I received a new letter stating that as I failed to respond to the previous request they are passing the debt to a collection agency.

I'm annoyed as I did respond by two forms of communication. I'm particularly concerned about my credit report (I checked it back in April and it was clear then. I'm worried it won't be now).

I'm not sure what to do now. Is there anything I can do if it's now on my credit report baring in mind that I did get in contact (I'm going to request a new copy of my report tonight)? How should I approach this?
