I have just joined pru health via quidco ( will get £115 ) . Will then pay £24 per month and get a free mountain bike after 30 days . This means just over 4 months of free healthcare + bike .

I have used this website before http://www.evanscycles.com/dept.jsp;jsessionid=11D05F14896459CBDA1A47E885F94337.tc7?dept_id=1001 and Have been very hapy with their service/prices.
The bike was delivered within 3 days and all you needed to do was fasten the pedals and straighten the handle bars and you were away.
You got all the tools for doing so and it came with a protective cardboard sleeve/box.
I have been looking at more bikes and they do seem to be cheapest on froogle/price runner.

I assume you will be travelling by road, so I think its a good idea to look for a hybrid (mountain bike frame with road tyres) as the frame is sturdy for bumping up and down curbs but the road tyres offer reduced resistance for your commute.
For your budget theres very little difference in spec between manufacturers.

After looking on that evans site there is little under £140 (hyrbid wise) so a bit over budget.

The other route is to buy a mountain bike and fit road tyres, this may sound a step backwards but it sounds like your buying for a single purpose only i.e. commuting so the road tyres will allow you to pick up a bit of speed that nobbly mountain bike tyres would take away.

Without meanig to sound unhelpful ebay may also be a good source. I have sold £300 (when new) bikes for £50 only two years later as I didnt want to post and that was the going rate.
Maybe have a look on there and you may pick up a bargain.

N.B. I am not connected to evans cycles, that link is to their bargain section

Have you tried your local free cycle?
I have a mountain bike which I bought brand new 3 years ago and have only used it a hand full of times and so intend putting it on freecycle when I get the chance/remember to do it.
    BTW: where do you live?

Just have a good look at the welds, I have bought a couple of cheap bikes in the last 2 years, under £120, and quality varies a lot, Make sure you get a decent frame guarentee, as some of the sub £100 are made from chinese monkey metal, The last thing you want is a frame collapsing on you.
Halfords is pretty good and you can haggle in there.
  • I saw a bike in Halfords yesterday £160 reduced to £80 - full suspension. Not sure if it was any good. Picked it up and it was not too heavy (well I thought not)

The problem with a full suspension for commuting is that you actually waste energy bobbing up and down. A hard tail is much more efficient, these sub £100 full suspension bikes are made out of cheap materials and will not last prolonged daily use.
I know this as I have a friend who runs a bike shop, he bought some and sold them on their looks and wow factor but the bolts sheared, rims bent and the components such as shifters etc jst let go.

I can personally recommend Sterling House Cycles:

The gents fusion is ideal and you will not be disappointed @ £49.00!
  • If you want a cheap, good bike, don't get any suspension and get a good brand. Suspension = weight. Rear suspension = power sucking and no use anyway
