You must have a very small company if you can afford to spend time immediately processing staff expenses. Any organisation with more than a few employees will have a defined procedure, and I would normally expect that to involve a cut-off date each month by which time expense claims have to be submitted, and a later date when payment is made. A wait of up to 6 weeks to get expenses back would be quite usual.

Of course, if there are large or consistent expenses to be met then it might be sensible to issue employees incurring those expenses with a company credit card so that neither the company nor the employee is paying anything until the statement arrives.

I work for a huge company and my expenses are often approved within 24 hours and paid within 3 business days. There are no cut off dates or extended wait once approved.
Its a poor excuse for any company to think its acceptable to make staff wait 6 weeks to reimburse personal monies spent on business expenses.

Many major bus companies insist that drivers use their own money for the float and also deduct from the drivers wages any shortages in revenue.

I remember trying to get on a bus with a £20 note quite a few years ago now, driver said he was not going to risk taking it! I could unstand if it was 50 +years ago but this was circa 2004!

Too much for the driver to lose if the counting house found it was a forgery as the £20 would be deducted from his wages. Most drivers only keep a £5 float so he may not have had sufficient change.

been in that situation before. Last bus home after a long shift at work. The bus driver refused to take my £20. Luckily i managed to scrape the money together from a couple work colleagues.

But very, very normal in many different sectors & industries.

Having worked in public & private across construction, education & manufacturing I can asssure you that it is entirely common for people to have to pay for everyday expenses and reclaim monthly. Exceptions were in one job I had a co. credit card but not all parking meters took cards then and one company had a department that booked all accommodation centrally so we didnt have to.

Everything else was my expense and claimed through my wages monthly. Sometimes petty cash is available to cover, for example, a taxi fare but not the norm.

Very much the case in my experience too, even in local government where more often than not, expenses would take almost two months to be paid.

I work for a large company now and we only pay expenses monthly by BACS. It would be impossible for us to pay within 7-14 days, it would mean multiple BACS runs and would tie up most managers time with claim checking and authorisation.

This thread is the first time I have ever heard of payments being made on an almost instant basis.

The comment about company credit cards also made me smile, hell would freeze over in our company before company credit cards were issued!!

Very happily married on 10th April 2013 :D

It's good and reassuring for the OP that this thread has stayed on track and given the feedback required. Wouldn't it be a waste of the OPs time if we got onto subjects such as "business expenses reimbursement" and "Getting the last bus home in 2004"

There are some good points out here which I will take aboard. I do believe that management should have been better in explaining it, instead of 'telling me off' for not having brought in my own float.

I do get my float back at the end of the day, but there is still a nagging feeling that it might have been wrong still, maybe thats because they haven't explained it properly? As I'm one of the oldest working there (most are teenagers, I however am approaching my 30s haha) I will probably be always the only one asking for clarification. As the rest accepts it.

As I had a double shift yesterday and will have one today, I will have time to ask today. But the little explanation I had yesterday was that this is a newly opened restaurant and all Front of House team hasn't worked in a restaurant before. This way, as it's their (or mine) money they will be more carefull in giving back change etc. And we carry a money belt.

I will see this through, as I do love working there. But will keep an eye out on what's happening in the future. At least for now, how wrong it may sounds, it is a job, they pay me and I love it. I can't afford not working and with the stress from moving last month I am quite happy to stay where I am. And then from the New Year I will see what I will do.

Thanks all once again, I will keep you posted if anything changes.

I don't have too much to add but as a manager of a well known fast food chain I know that if I asked my staff to bring their own float in they would look at me as if I had two heads.

Also I agree with those that say this should have been properly communicated during inductions and explained why they require you to do it.

Then why can't they provide the float at the begining of the shift?
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.

Why should they when they can get some underpaid worker desperate for a job to provide their own float.
