A starter for Christmas lunch

  • We normally have prawn cocktail. OH's house normally has smoked salmon. We are doing Christmas for both so we are having both with wheaten bread. Some people will have 1, most will have 2. I may also do egg mayonaise as I like it...

Usually drinks and snacks start at midday, so a formal starter;s unnecessary.
I thought of making a spicy butternut squash soup but I made a trial run last night and it's horrible!
I am fascinated by this, how can it have possibly gone wrong???! The beauty of this soup, other than being super-healthy (if you skip the cream) is that it's so simple, can be made in advance and frozen, it's a really easy option!

  • Starters for us on Christmas Day usually meant a bacon sandwich for breakfast. :) We don't have starters now, as the main meal is normally enough and there's the rest of the day to fill up at the corners. :)

Love the idea of the baked brie though!

Exactly the same for us :)

Bacon butties in the morning then a big xmas dinner.

I have never heard of having egg mayonnaise as a starter! I don't like it anyway but only ever thought of it as a sandwich filling! :p

Last year we got a little desperate for ideas as we were cooking for my in-laws who are quite fussy and ended up doing Chinese duck pancakes which went down a treat so we're going to do that again this year! :) Would like to serve pate but my pregnant sister-in-law can't eat it! That pate recipe from Madvixen looks so good I might have to make it anyway and eat it all myself! ;)

Either pate or mozzarella, tomato and basil salad with crusty bread, yum.
