freeze suet?

has anyone ever frozen vegetable suet? Got about 2/3 of a packet left from my Christmas pudding. We are not big on stews in this house so unlikely to make dumplings. I breifly considered making mincemeat but little time now, tempted to just freeze it for next years Christmas pud!

I found a packet in my cupboard which was not long before its expiry date. As I once used some rancid vegetable suet (_pale_) I used some for my Christmas puddings and the rest has gone in the freezer. I don't see why it shouldn't be fine - I usually have tubs of margarine in the freezer and they thaw fine too.
  • Never tried freezing it but it keeps for ages. I finished a packet last month that was 8 months out of date. It was fine.

It's good for pastry, and for making stuffing as well.
  • Can you just use it in pastry in place of lard? That is something I might do.
It seems to me it should freeze ok, but it doesnt actually say on the packet "suitable for home freezing" which is why I asked. It is also nice to get some other ideas as to what I can use it for. I make my own pastry quite a lot for quiches and am considering making mince pies if time allows.

  • You need about half the weight of suet to plain flour, mix with water for a nice short pastry
