Sushi making gift

Thinking about getting my sister the sushi making essentials for her present this year. What do you need to make sushi? Our local Asda has a whole shelf full of sushi items but what is essential and what is just nice to have?

I had an email the other day from yo sushi about sushi making gift sets.

However I'm not sure what's essential if you were to put your own kit together.

I saw something like this at the Ideal HOme Exhibition a few years ago. Its an alternative to a rolling mat, which I assume is quite fiddly to use as you have to roll it quite tight so the sushi doesn't fall apart.

You basically add the ingredients to the mould, press it together and then cut it in the mould, before tipping it out.

Exactly what is on the list minus booklet. And cling-film to roll the sushi. Personally I don’t use rice vinegar – don’t feel any difference. Soy sauce – Kikkoman is the best to my taste - Waitrose has 250 ml bottle for something like 2.65? and it’s the best price. The rest it’s better to get from Chinese stores (but compare the price before you buy, your Chinese might be expensive).

Thanks :) I'll have a look in the two Asian shops up here and Asda!

  • This is a great gift idea! I got a sushi kit/lessons for my birthday a few years back and I remember thinking how original and thoughtful the person was.

I use both a rolling mat and rice vinegar, haha. I'm probably going through some unnecessary hassle if other people are getting by fine without them...but I'm a creature of habit and will continue doing as I have been.

    ...I use ... a rolling mat ...
Bamboo math – yes, and on the top – cling film (food wrap, whatever it’s called) so sushi “sausage” would not stick to the math. This way you could do several rounds with the same math. And you could make “sausage” a little bit tighter while it is in the film. Helpful for beginners.
  • i agree about the clingfilm as it rolls it tighter in the mat (plus to keep that clean as well) and to stop the contents sticking to the mat too.

    essentials:

sushi rice (make sure it's for sushi making as no ordinary rice will do)
    soya sauce,
    rice vinegar
    wasabi paste
pickled ginger slices (normally in packets in chilled cabinet of chinese s/m. the jarred stuff is nasty)

maybe, get the recipient a book as well as it will give recipes and methods too. it's quite hard for a beginner to start with sushi, but the more practice you get, the better the sushi looks! (it's all about presentation!)
