Tax!

Options
Hi, this is my post after being a long time lurker.

Well my problem is for April 2010 - April 2011 I paid 20 % tax on all my earnings (Which was under £1000 ) but I got the paid tax back at October 2011.

From April 2011 - April 2012 I paid 274.20 tax which was also 20 % tax.

Can I get this 274.20 tax back as I earned less then my personal allowance ?

Also why do I have to pay tax if I can get it back?

Many Thanks
Michael Phillips

    what is your tax code?
do you have only one job?
    howmuch did you earn?

    but
it would seem your tax code is either BR or something like 0T

you need to speak to the tax man and ask for a normal tax code ie. 810L

and yes you can get a refund of your tax if your earning were less than the tax allowance 7475 for 2011-12

My tax code is OT/O (What does that even mean?)

I only have the one job it used to be only one day a week but now its 5 days a week and I earned for April 2011 - April 2012 (1,371.90) April 2010 - April 2011 (959)

Also if I earn less than 7475 I can get a tax refund on my earnings?

    Many Thanks

0T means you have no tax free allowance

you need to phone HMRC or write saying you should be on a 'normal ' taxcode and that you overpaid tax for last year.
I would suggest phoning (I find it best to phone first thing in the morning or early evening)

    0T
Is used when your allowances have been used up or reduced to nil and your income is taxed at the relevant tax rates. May also be used if you've started a new job and don't have a form P45 or haven't completed a form P46 before your first pay day
