My kitchen STINKS today and the culprit is my dog's breakfast - raw oily fish & tripe mince. I have thoroughly washed everything up but have now tracked the smell down to our wooden worksurface where I think some liquid from the mince must have dribbled onto when I was defrosting it.
I have scrubbed with Fairy and sprayed Dettol Antibacterial on it but the smell is unsuprisingly still there. I'm thinking the answer will be something to do with vinegar or bicarb, but I'm not sure what to do as I don't want to wreck my worktop (or make it smell worse).
Any tips please?!

I think vinegar would do the trick, but if you're worrying about it affecting the worktop, you might wish to just scatter some bicarb on it initially. Try last thing at night and leaving it until the next day - a hoover nozzle should get the bicarb out of any gaps. I often used vinegar on wooden worktops though with no problem.
May be worth investing a couple of quid in a plastic tub too - I have a long narrow one that fits two (2lb) blocks of my dogs' raw food in it so all their food is defrosted in that, so the resulting leakage is safely contained!0 -
a lemon and some salt should do it. http://www.examiner.com/article/how-to-clean-wooden-cutting-boards-with-lemon-and-saltOpinion on everything, knowledge of nothing.0

Thanks all - I've rubbed it over with vinegar for now and it's definitely taken the edge off it, although have had baking in the oven all afternoon so that might be helping too! Am going to sprinkle bicarb over last thing tonight then re-sniff in the morning.
Krylr - that's a good idea. I was only part-defrosting the 1lb blocks enough to cut them up to put into individual plastic tubs in the freezer (small dog so one block does 5 meals!) and it was somewhere in that process that the liquid got onto the worktop - next time I'll make sure I do it all either inside a big container or put a bigger board underneath.0
