Cheap Gift Boxes For Homemade Chocolates

Hi people

As 2012 has been a hard year, Ive decided to make some christmas presents this year in order to save money (or try to anyway!).

Im looking to make some truffles, popcorn, hampers etc for some relatives but am finding it difficult finding nice gift boxes to put them in, the only attractive ones I can seem to find cost about at least £2 odd each....Any ideas where I could find nice packaging at low costs?

Thank you.

Not very helpful now, I'm afraid, but I save pretty boxes, and non-branded packing over the year, exactly for this!
My immediate suggestion is to get some of the clear plastic boxes such as the kind used in take-aways. If you have a Chinese supermarket or cash-&-carry you can get them very cheaply (and a bit wider range); but even bought in ordinary supermarkets they are cheaper.
Line with baking parchment or doilies. They do look a bit classier if you leave the lid off, and cover with cellophane, tied with "curly" ribbon.
Or you can make a nice "parcel" using the baking parchment & ribbon.

Lakeland do an impressive array of this stuff at reasonable prices, but you may be a bit late for mail order (worth looking to see if you are near a store)

Later: it occurs to me that pound shops often have cheapie plastic containers or tins.
  • You could make cones from brown wrapping paper then hand make labels to tie or stick on, using red or green ribbon would make it festive and they would have a vintage look to them.

Mum used to use the poly trays that supermarket food was sold on, wash them and just cover the sweets with cling film before gifting, the sweets tasted so good that nothing was ever said about the trays.
Dad was a dab hand with a hobby knife and would cut shapes out of cardboard then cover will alluminium foil and again the sweets were covered with cling film and/or xmas paper if they were going to a charity stall.

If you are desperate then carry-out plastic trays with lids will do the job :)

These are what I am using for homemade truffles this year. They hold about 12 each so work out well cost wise :)
