tax refund 2005/06

Options
Today, I received a self assessment statement. The bottom line is a tax refund from the year 05/06 regarding an overpayment. However, it less than £10 so no early Christmas for me :(

The statement also refers to 06/07 (my last year of self assessment) but there is nothing owed or owing for that year. That year I received a letter from HMRC saying I no longer needed to submit a return unless there was a change in my circumstances.

Is it normal to receive a self assessment statement referring to years that far back?

Although HMRC do not automatically issue Self-Assessment refunds less than £10 you can request the money from them at any time. If you've got an online self-assessment account you can arrange the refund yourself. If not, just telephone them and they'll sort it out for you.

Is it normal to get statements after so long - not really. There's usually a qualifying transaction needed to trigger a statement being issued

Maybe they've just sent it to remind you of the refund available on your dormant account.

    :)

The link is quite jargon heavy. It's from the internal guidance manual, so written for HMRC's staff. There's probably a plain English explanation somewhere in the 'public facing' parts of the website.

Anyway I hope the general info helps.
