food wise look for low sugar items rather than diabetic foods apart from being no better than low sugar items diabetic foods can have a laxative effect. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I wouldn't bother with any food/sweets for diabetics. Better a wee bit of a decent chocolate etc.
Books, DVDs, CDs, socks, slippers. Do you have a theme? That can make it easier - night in/fishing/favourite tv show/favourite movie.0 -
Thornton's do a diabetic range.Married the lovely Mr P 28th April 2012. Little P born 29th Jan 20140

id just go for all his favourite things, he will know how to manage it, as others have said dont buy diabetic foods, they are notorious for having laxative effects!0

Luxury dried fruit and nuts are a good idea as long as your DD can restrict the amount he eats per serving. Ditto nice cheeses and alcohol - everything in moderation!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

My DD is diabetic. She loves Segsations (she can then easily manage 1 portion at a time).0

BTW in Lidl today they were selling mens diabetic socks - looser around the top to aid circulation.0

My Dad is a diabetic - do not give him Thornton Diabetic chocs as after one or two he may spend Xmas on the loo as reported some time ago by Watchdog.
Give him Dark chocolate or a bar of Cadburys milk but just make sure he only has a few chunks in the day.
Diabetic socks was a good suggestion, i bought 6 pairs on Ebay for around £7.
A diary maybe to put his blood sugar readings in.0 -
As the others have suggested, diabetic sweets and chocolate are a big no no due to lax effects, but good quality dark choc is perfect because you can have a few squares and it gives you a chocolate hit without needing to eat all of it. Is he type one or two? A foot care kit would be lovely - pummice stone, foot cream etc. Diabetics have to take extra care of feet because of circulation etc. Savory things are best - oatcakes, cheese etc. Maybe some sweetex tablets (sweetener) for his tea if he drinks it with some nice tea bags and a mug?
Hope this has helped, I'm a type 1 diabetic and just trying to think what diabetes related things I would like to receive. I think it's nice to receive a few things diabetes related but also be sure to focus it around his personality too just because diabetes tends to take over our lives a little!
My friend got me the best diabetes related present once, she had me a mug made with 'don't talk to me until I've had my insulin' on it... :rotfl: 0
