UK Unemployment falls again

  • Theres over 9 million adults in the U.K who are not working, economically inactive- whatever you want to call it.
About 1/4 of all working age adults dont work. Absolutley scandelous. People who dont look for jobs dont know how bad it is and how many jobs that are commission only, volunteering, zero hours, 2 hour per week etc.

Provided you tick the box marked "self employed" you get rewarded with no more hassle, continuing tax credits, and a cheap class two NI "stamp". Forget the last one if you qualify for home responsibilities payments.

You get this in exchange for swapping from "Unemployed/inactive/unemployable" into economically active and add your name to Britain's booming unskilled workforce.

I am actually all in favour of this pledge to make "working" pay. as if you are in the system, even picking rubbish in a recycling plant, you have your foot on the bottom rung of economic reality - and your eyes raised towards the stars - what is more my experience of self employed failures is that they blame themselves (and perhaps the tax level that bankrupted them) but they are still positive that they could do it all over again and succeed (or their kids could).

Now all we have to do is get that message across to the 15 year olds. They often think they can win X-factor given 1% talent and 99% lack of commitment.

I blame their mothers for over protecting the little darlings.

I have a "redundant" friend in the too young to retire too old to change category.
Whether he has enough of a stash/pension to survive penury in old age is debatable. I have explained how the game has to be played, but I am not sure he has quite cottoned on yet.
  • Yeah but if he doesnt earn anything at all, wont he eventually get kicked off the tax credits?.Also will he get his council tax paid if he does this?

People claiming cash on the dole are 1.5m....the total number registered and actively seeking work are 2.5m...so 1m not claiming money.
If the inactive count has gone up 60,000 it could mean they have cash and can't claim dole afer the initial 6 months or they have simply given up looking for work.

theguardian published, as did many other tabloids on the increasing numbers of homeless we have in the UK.

Where are these people placed when figures like this are collated?

They will definatley be in the economically inactive group with the other 9 million.!
I think a lot of people have given up looking for work to be honest as theres virtually nothing about.

Yes there is some sort of method for checking that the self employed are earning. They have to complete an annual self assessment tax return for example ,
However if you opt out of job seekers on 06th April in 2012 (say) it is 31January2014 before your tax return is overdue.

A week is a long time in politics.

[I am not an expert in this but there are several threads on here by people legitimately working the system and doing what could be the equivalent of 16 hours work a week - we self employed have our homes or the back of our vans, as our place of business - so we are working the moment the alarm goes off. If you are serious about self reliance you are !]

Don't you become a non person - like an illegal immigrant ?

I think you need to give something a bit more solid than a mobile telephone number to claim benefits.

An acquaintance of mine is a park keeper and gets a valuable "tied cottage" as part of the job (a bit like a school caretaker).
One dark night the car park was invaded by "travellers".
They gave his address as their address on their benefit claims - his employers insisted that he go and play postman - well they had got kiddies hadn't they !
