Acer are indeed cheap and cheerful but I found a couple of niggly things that I didn't like about mine.
1. The hard drive is partitioned which is a pain (imho)
and
2. It's XP on a FAT file system instead of NTFS which is a bit of a pain sometimes, not everything works quite right. But, of course, newer ones will have Vista, which is a pain all of its own! :rotfl:

have you checked out the latest dell deals? I was going to get an acer, and kept looking and looking at the various offers that go round the net, in the end went for a dell as the spec that i could get was much higher than an acer for less. 2gb ram 120gb hd, turino 64x2 £420 all including a battery upgrade, I was prepared to spend much more but could not fault the spec. for the money. I am using it as we speak. The only problem I have had is with vista, seems a bit buggy so far, but I'm sure microsoft will sort it out.0

MY friend has just brought this one from PC World. I think you can get it slightly cheaper with quidco cashback from Currys or Dixons online. He builds PCs on the side for beer money so knows a lot about computers. He needed a laptop ASAP which is why he went to PCworld but he seems impressed with it so far.0
