Furious!!

Currently in the process of improving my credit score after getting into a mess years ago. In the last month I have managed to get my credit score up from the 'poor' category to 'fair' on experian (I know its just a number but to me its important!).

Last week I tried to buy a Christmas present online from Next and they processed my order and opened a credit account for me without giving me a choice. I just wanted to pay for the item on my debit card so I went online immediately and cleared the balance on this new account as I didn't want anymore credit.

Today I went on to check my experian report and it has moved back down to the 'poor' category because of this new credit account!!!

To say I'm furious is an understatment, I didn't want this account in the first place!

  • Give Next a call and complain. New lines of credit do affect your credit rating unofrtunately, thats the sad thing, especially since you've worked hard to build it up.

  • The worst thing is that I didn't even apply for credit and wasn't given a choice to take it out! I had to enter my address for delivery and the next thing I got an email saying my order had been sent!

I will give them a call later this morning and get the account closed. Hopefully this will update on my credit file quickly rather than the usual month it can take
  • Generally credit files are only updated once / month so it probably won't be an instantaneous change.

Do contact Ne*xt and complain - you should've been given an option to choose how you wanted to pay ....

  • Very did the same for me. I bought one thing for £10 over a year ago - as it ws the only place in the UK I could find it. Paid by debit card - but when the order came so did my account details, with a £500 limit.

i didnt ask for the account, have never used it, and didnt want it.

That one item is still the only thing Ive ever bought from them - one reason being this account they set up for me without asking.
  • It doesn't seem to be possible to make a straightforward online order with Next, you automatically get signed up to their catalogue credit scheme. I think it's very sneaky.

If you completely cancel the order with Next you could always try speaking to Experian- not sure how easy it is to remove it though.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

I seem to remember that next send you a catalogue whether you ask for it or not and then charge you for it. I bought a coat from them a few years ago online and found They had given me a credit account, very annoying.
  • Well to give you an update I just got off the phone with Next.

They were very helpful and apologetic, they closed my account no problem and said they would remove the search from my credit report however this wont show until February!!

Next time I think I'll just go into the store!
  • I have this problem with Next too. I had an account- cleared it and closed it. As much as i'd like to buy things from Next online I dont because I know they automatically open an account. I cant be bothererd having to pay and deal with accounts and it becomes tempting to just put a load of xmas presents on it or something. I dont buy anything from Next anymore because of this, even avoid the stores.
  • Glad you sorted it- why cant they just be like normal stores and have a normal online store. I also think its shocking how they charge for their own directory!!

I'm sorry and I really dont mean to sound harsh but why are you worried what your experian score has you down as? Are you planning to take a screen-print and put it in a frame that you are fair as opposed to poor?

No lender is ever going to take any notice whatsoever of what it says so if you were planning on having a mad half hour and applying for cards and loans then it wont matter what your score says or whether its 'fair' 'brilliant' 'peachy' or whatever.

I know you say it matters to you, but you wont be the one lending yourself the money or providing yourself the card. If none of the lenders give two hoots about it, I dont know why you are concerned.
