SANTANDER - HMRC - Screw up

Hands up, due to a mental illness I was late filing a Tax return for 1010/2011 so I got the £100.00 late filing penalty.

In March/April I tried to obtain my bank statements from Santander online only to find that they only go back 15 months so didnt cover the period Mar10/Apr11 that I needed.

I contacted the bank for the statements and they were ordered, some time later they still hadn't arrived, I called the bank again and another set of statements ordered...... again, these did not arrive.

I was told to wait for two more weeks to see if they arrived and they did not and yet another set were ordered..... same story, nothing arrived.

I asked the Bank to check my contact details and to where they statements had been sent, this was all correct but nothing had been received.

In the meantime, I was now getting daily penalty fee's for late filing of the Self Assessment Tax Return.

I asked the bank to send the information that I needed yet again, but this time to send it Recorded Delivery to prove that it was being delivered, they refused to do this. There was no other way but via the bank that I could obtain the information I needed.

Many phone calls later and I finally managed to get the information emailed to me.

I was told over the phone that the Bank had made the error and that I was to send in the late filing penalty invoice for them to Pay direct. this I did.

I now have had a reminder from HMRC saying it hasn't been paid and the Bank saying that there's nothing they will do about it as there's no evidence of any of this. Despite them having all the phone records and times / notes taken of when I have called them.

I now have a £1200 HMRC bill and no way to pay it.

Typically in a case like this you would pay it and the bank would refund you if they agreed such a thing.

All you can do is put a complaint in to Santander explaining what happened and see what they say.

Why do you need copies of old statements?
  • have you not been into branch to get the statements you need
would seem a better way ( what i would used to do when i had banked with them because there systems can look up that information just take some id and your bank card the call call centres are useless)

as for writing a complaint good luck with that this bank is rubbish so many headaches with there complaints in the past i have commentated on here about which i wont go on about to you

  • I've been told by Santander in a txt to my mobile this morning that my complaint has been closed...

News to me as I haven't finished yet.........
  • Surprise, surprise - they say they've listened to the phone calls and on no occasion did they agree to pay the £1200.

Utter Rubbish !! I was told on two separate occasions over the phone that they would do this. They agreed there had been a problem getting the statements to me and that they would pay the fee and I was to send in the relevant details.

    I'm FUMING !!!!!!!!

And they closed the complaint without even contacting me!!!

They paid for the late penalty charges I got because they didnt give me the information I needed when I asked for it time and time again.
