New Winter Coat - Help Please

Now that we have a dog and we are out walking im in all weathers I desperately need a new coat - but after looking around numerous shops my brain is well and truely fried.

I need something thats waterproof and windproof, with a proper hood (not one of those fold away things found on many of the 3 in 1 coats). I'd love something thats a parka style too (yes Im being fussy).

Are there any brands I should avoid? I can see its going to be a big outlay so are any brands better at lasting than others?

Thanks

  • uniqlo have a good rep from the budget market
  • We do a lot of dog walking in all weathers and after wasting money on cheaper coats and getting wet and cold we took the plunge and invested in north Face 3 in 1's discounted from Cotswold outdoors and they have been fantastic.I think they were about £130.00 each but honestly worth every penny.
  • There was a lovely parka style Regatta coat in the range today. It came in two different greeny brown type colours and I'm pretty sure it was £59.99.
    Rubbish at the grocery challenge!

Depending on your budget a Barbour is ideal for dog walking in bad weather.
Loads of styles and prices but they last for years and you can re wax if they need it (I had one for many years and never needed to).

I did see a nice North Face coat but it was in expensive Snow & Rock so you can imagine how much it cost but unfortunately I've been unable to find it cheaper anywhere else. I'm going to pop to Cheshire Oaks at the weekend so hopefully they will have something similar there. Dont care if its last seasons as long as it does the job and a reasonable price.

I'm thinking the 3 in 1 type coats might be best - if its going to cost me money I want to be able to use it for more than the winter months.
  • I have horses so need weatherproof and warm...Joules coats are great...you can get second hand on ebay. They cost about £80 new. Listed as blouson jackets usually but swear by them
  • If you did want to splash out a bit on something like North Face you will definitely get your money's worth. Along with other brands like Kathmandu, Berghaus etc. These all cost a wee bit but they will literally last for years. There's not much weather you'll face in the UK that a North Face (or similar) jacket won't hold up to.

I'm sure North Face actually do a parker style as well... might be worth having a Google for it or something.

Anyway, just thought I'd chip in as I've worked in a few outdoors shops and owned these jackets all my life and they are totally great. But it's important you do get the style you want too, otherwise you won't enjoy wearing the jacket and it'll go to waste! :)
