Rag Rug Making tips?

Hi
My mums brought up a load of old material which I have braided into strips long enough to make a rug about the size of a bath mat.

I now need to bind the plaits together to make the rectangular rug: what's the best way to do this? It needs to be sturdy as knowing us it will get quite a lot of use.

Then I will also want to wash it from time to time, are rag rugs safe to go on a machine wash?

I have looked on wikihow etc but none of it makes sense to me, am hoping some of the lovely experienced OSers can help me out!
