In your Op it does not say that your son has digested battery fluid and I am going to assume that he wasn't drinking the bath water. If the lady in question had shouted and stressed out you would surely have called that unprofessional.

You are right to be concerned over the safety of this toy and I wasn't suggesting otherwise, I just don't see what more this lady could have done to help. Try phoning again or visiting the store and asking to speak to the manager. Take the toy with you to show them that it is dangerous and they can then deal with the problem from there.

I really truly hope that your son shows no ill effects from this. Children are the most important assett on the planet and I would not wish harm on any of them.

  • Whilst I sympathise about the acid, I feel that you maybe came across as very aggressive. Swearing will have put the CS girls back up I'm sure. I think I'd have been tempted to visit the store and speak face to face with a manager.

Sorry, but what was the young lady supposed to do. It wasn't her fault that the toy was faulty. If we want "the far east to stop making shoddy goods", we should be prepared to pay more for our goods.

However I am sorry that this has caused you some concern over your childs health and I am sure that if there hasn't been any reaction to the battery leakage yet there probably wont be.

As far as I can see the lady did the best she could. If it was a little unfeeling, it was a saturday she was probably overworked and underpaid.

Maybe so, but what happened to 'The customer is always right' ? I know she offered a goodwill gesture, but she surely noticed how concerned/p!ssed off Mr Idle was - IMO, someone who works in customer services should know how to handle complaints better than just assuming everyone wants a goodwill gesture.

Have you any idea how many of this type of complaint you recieve in one day on customer services. They are given the power to reimburse and send out apologies, but they can't issue product recalls. Perhaps she should have handed the OP onto a manager but to be honest 99.9% of customers do only want a good will gesture.

Child in bath playing with boat. Child picks up boat and splashes about. Boat starts leaking water and battery fluid. Child has touched this.

Working out where I'm coming from yet?????

As for what more 'this lady' could have done, well stop reading from a script would be a start. Within 30 seconds she's offering a good will gesture.

If I had gone to the store I'd have been tempted to slot the manager one. Not wise for somebody with anger problems. The phone call was the politest I've had in a long while.

Oh so that's alright then. Just cos they get a lot of customers ringing up about dangerous goods. A good will gesture should see them right. F**k the dangers to somebody else. They CAN issue product recalls for items which are dangerous. This quite clearly IS DANGEROUS.

It's a shame I'm in the 0.1% that aint after every penny I can get hold of then aint it? Maybe if we didn't live in an ambulance chasing 'where there's blame, there's a claim' society more people would actually care.

That's probably true, but if you're working in CS, then you should be able to recognise when someone isn't just after a gw gesture - & as you say, she should have handed the call to a manager/supervisor. I wasn't suggesting she had the power to sort a product recall.

I have worked in CS before, now I'm in the travel industry - so I deal with a lot of complaints - & I can tell when someone is just after a voucher or discount off their next holiday, as opposed to the clients who have something genuine to complain about. Some come across agressive, some are just upset at the amount of money they have spent, but someone with good customer service skills will adjust & react differently to each individual - rather than offering everyone the same thing - whatever the complaint may be.

The script is all she has to offer, she will be a near minimum wage student in all likelyhood and she may have handled it a bit poorly. Take the matter up with someone who can see you and the faulty product, who can get the product recalled.

Of course I can see where you are coming from I am not heartless and as far as I can see the only point I am disgreeing with you on is the conduct of the asda employee. Please tell me your son is showing no ill effects.

Much as I'm concerned about dangers to children, I really don't think this employee was at fault.

If I'd have been their employee, trying to help with the situation, I certainly wouldn't have appreciated being sworn at aggressively over the phone.

All too often I see people directly abusing staff in low paid jobs such as supermarkets, McDonalds etc. - after all - they are human beings too.

Was the ASDA employee impolite to you? Did they swear back at you? Did they completely ignore your concern? I doubt it.

On a secondary point (though too late now) - if you'd have used alkaline batteries, they wouldn't have leaked.

    1) I never said the employee was at fault
    2) I wasn't aggressive.
    3) What's her being low paid got to do with anything?
    4) It was a call centre I rang.
    5) No she wasn't impolite. Just inconsiderate.
    6) Yes they ignored my concern. Hence the good will gesture.
    7) Pay more attention when reading posts.
    8) Thanks for the advice but it's about as much use to me as a limp d!ck in a brothel.
