You're in a production line in a busy factory and anything which interferes with your ability to hear alarms/cries for help and so on should be banned.

Using your analogy, how would a hearing impaired individual be accomodated?

By either an induction loop or a risk assessment (most probably the latter)

Why do you think employers find all sorts of excuses to not employer people with disability?

I was getting at visual alarms such as strobes.

This isn't a disability situation, though is it? This is a "why can't we wear headphones that play music" situation.

If the OP had been deaf and refused a job because they refused to accommodate him then it would be an issue - but it's not.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Then how do you cater for blind or epileptic people ;)

Its all about risk assessments these days
  • I'm an engineer working in a large open plan office. I reckon the majority of people there use headphones. No ones ever tried to ban it.

And there is the winner. Induction loops are easy to get on ebay along with a receiver that fits in the ear. Barely visible.

I think you can guess what it could be used for without anyone noticing :D
