No fixed abode bankruptcy

I have a friend. He is of no fixed abode. A few years ago he ran up some debts with credit card and catalogue companies. He has no idea what ones he had the debts with. Back then his life was not good, he was drinking too much, marriage broke up, etc. He packed up and has been a wanderer since. Anyhow he's wanting to get these debts gone now and try and sort his life out.

Is there a way of finding out what you owe?
Declare yourself bankrupt if you don't have a home address?

Thanks

If these debts were over 6 years ago and he has had no contact with the companies to acknowledge the debt, then they may be statute barred which means they are written off which would save the whole bankruptcy process. CAB will give free advice, but I suggest he does not contact any of the companies until he has had the advice.

One thing to point out is that if he does petition for his own bankruptcy he should not have his address as "No fixed abode", he should have it put as "lately residing at..." without a current address.

The reason for this is that "No fixed abode" on a bankruptcy order is another way of saying that the person is in prison (as you aren't allowed a prison address in a bankruptcy description).

He should also be aware that most catalogue debts are unenforceable as there is no signed agreement. With a couple of letters many companies can be persuaded not to persue the debt.

But if he's NFA, he's not being harassed by creditors anyway. Sort out accommodation first?

Sounds like he needs CAB-type advice. Chucking £335 at a bankruptcy petition may not be the best thing to do.
