I'd open it up and smell it (when it's completely defrosted), if it smells funny, then I'd bin it. If it doesn't, then I would cut a small bite-size piece, pan fried it (no seasoning) and taste it (again without any seasoning.) If it tastes ok then I'd eat the whole lot. Perhaps I'd also do this test at lunch time to make sure my tummy is completely fine the whole afternoon and cook it all dinner time. But that's me, a risk taker. :p

I'm a risk taker too. Cooking chicken through will kill any bacteria including any campylobactor bacteria (which is in almost all raw chicken) mentioned earlier. Heat up to a high temperature and all bacteria will be killed. However, it may not taste so good so a smell and visual test first. However, it's now the 10th so I suppose another 3 days may a bit too late.

But it won't kill the toxins left in the meat.

Toxins just make the food taste awful. That's why I'd do a smell test first. The dates on foods are very conservative. Smells alright then I'd eat anything that has been cooked thoroughly. It's my risk...I wouldn't serve this meat to children or elderly. It's my food that I will put in my own stomach so I don't mind taking a risk.

Hi, Just to clarify - it's raw uncooked chicken! I've now stuck it in the freezer until I decide if I dare risk cooking it. kje.

    In which case, I wouldn't!!

No chance - not with chicken even though I will eat most things past their date.

If they did, they wouldn't be a problem because very few people would eat bad-tasting or smelly food.
