thanks for the replies, we are not concerned about free school meals at the mo as DS is only 18 months old, but something to think about for the future. It is likely that we would only be doing it for the next couple of years. We are gonna talk about it some more, before we rush into anything. if we did do it then OH is likely to work part-time in the evenings.

I was going to suggest working evenings as an option. It's what we did when we had eldest and we needed me to be bringing in a wage too. I really liked it, it meant I could spend the day with DS, go to mums and tots, do housework etc, and then he was looked after by DH whilst I worked, meaning I had some adult conversation and all my pay packet was ours and not going on childcare. Once your child turns 3 there is non means tested funding available (term after 3rd birthday) which can reduce your childcare costs.

Dub, just make sure that any part time earnings dont affect your tax credits.

I worked full time for part of last year, then lost my job and am now working part time.

It turns out my part time earnings just took us into the lower rate and we've been overpaid by £3000.

Basically I shouldn't have bothered working, we'd have been better off

OH is only thinking of working a couple of evenings a week - no more than 16 hours a week.

If your OH is prepared to work evenings then the shortfall from his wages with not paying for childcare you could actually end up better off money wise. I work 20 hours a week £460 a month bring home. I have no childcare costs. Its is wirth looking at both options at home all the time, or part time. I am certainly better off for workign 20 hours a week.

I think it will end up with OH doing some sort of part time work in the evenings. We will have to work out both options on paper, before deciding.

Use www.entitledto.com to work out how much your tax credits would increase.

Thanks for that, apparently we too are very poor and we could get council tax help - so thank you very much!
