Humidifiers/Clay trays?

Not sure if I should post this here or in the DIY forums - here goes!
Littlest is having a hard time of it. I suspect 3 of the 4 in our house don't get along well with the Central Heating. Hubby and eldest DD have asthma.
The house is victorian aged, and the CH poorly balanced throughout the house. Littlests room is the coldest sadly.
Now that we have dealt with the mold/damp in littlests room, the minute it gets warm she is hacking and coughing.
We invested( questionable term) in an oil heater and turned off the rad in her room to cut down cooking every other room in the house. Perfect temp except the room is too dry. I really have issues in having the heating on, and the windows open. I can't afford to line some companies profit book. Yes we're sat here with jumpers and fleeces on.
I feel like I am going round in circles, throwing money at every problem.
I'd really like to get some sleep too, but that will come if I can just get this balance right! Ideas please guys! I don't want to spend £70 on a humidifier if it doesn't work - am I better just wetting a towel in the room? Hanging a little pot of water near the heater? ( this brings in other Health and Safety issues... of course.) Do humdifiers work - if so which?
