My perscription is -8.50 so I am entitled to free eye tests. I just sign the form they give me. Mind you, I had been paying for years before a friendly optician told me about this. I don't know what the lower limit for this is, but anyone with a strong perscription should ask.0

if your prescription is +/-10.00 or greater in any meridian you are classed as having a "complex" prescription and get free eye tests and a small discount (£13 for single vision) off glasses.
annmatkat, you must have a "cyl" component to your prescription of -1.50 or higher to take you to the threshold.Wiggly:heartpulsFB0 -
Legally, all complex prescriptions (as well as under 16s and registered blind/partially sighted patients) have to be dispensed by a registered Dispensing Optician or Optometrist. This isn't a monopoly, it's because if the distance from the eye to the lens is any different from the distance used in the eye test, - it results in a different 'effective' prescription, once the new glasses are made up - and the pupillary distance is critical too.
I doubt you'll find an online suppllier prepared to do the work - if you do - they're breaking the law and can end up prosecuted.Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.

If you have any queries you can e-mail them and they are really helpful. I had my frames reglazed last week, and was so impressed with the quick service. I sent my specs off on Thursday and received them back on Saturday. And they charged me half the price I was quoted on the high street!:j
Hi,
I am a Optician with my own practice. I had one of my patients come to see me, having had their glasses reglazed at less than half the cost, than we would have charged. I was ready to advise the patient about the pitfalls of doing such a thing, but after inspection (I hate to admit it) found the workmanship to be excellent, the p.d was correct and the prescription was spot on. As a consequence the patient was having no problems at all!
After much research it transpires that the company (https://www.ciliaryblue.com) that made them also provide similar glazing services to my own practice (and others) albeit for emergencies only. Hence the quality of the work.
There is room for companies like these that can work and run along side the High Street Optcians.
But do make sure the p.d (pupillary distance) is used correctly as it can have an impact on the quality and comfort visually for the wearer.
I hope this is of some use?0
