Don't forget that there are two aspects to making a quilt - the patchwork and the quilting afterwards. I am sure you will enjoy (many hours!) of hand quilting after you have made the patchwork!
  • Thanks everyone for the replies, will have to have a rethink i suspect. Would much rather hand sew but seems a bit of a faff with bits of paper would take me forever to cut them all and make sure they were straight. Might opt for the sewing machine although i'm sure there is something i need to get for that to make sure my seams are correct-not sure if a already have one or what it is lol

You can get a 1/4" foot for most machines, they really do make life easier!

I don't know how long you want your quilt to take but from start to finish with a month break in the middle it took me 7 months to hand make my first quilt. It's single bed size and I did it all by hand, no paper pieces just done as the pieces came.

If you have a cutter and a quilting ruler it's easy to straighten things up - you'll have to trim your blocks even if you use a machine so it's not much more faff to do it with hand sewn blocks.
  • I agree with alec-eiffel. My quilts usually take eight months, although I have one now that has taken two or three years because I am studying too. I use the old-fashioned method of tacking paper hexagons inside my patchwork fabric hexagons but I find this part just as relaxing as the rest. I don't tend to press the 'squares' before I sew them together.

Patchwork is the perfect craft to do in front of the tv. My largest quilt was done completely to episodes of CSI that DH wanted to watch.

    Good luck.

Stick a bit of cardboard onto the machine base with masking tape, at 1/4" seam allowance or whatever it is you want. Then as you sew butt the raw edges of the seam up to this, to giude you.

If you have an older machine you do probably have a seam guide that screws into the base. Looks like this. But a bit of cardboard does the trick too.
