Payday loan took money not owed

Thanks for all your responses, I fear I may have confused the issue with talk of Christmas. The money was in no way intended for gifts (I saved with Park Hamper this year so my gift budget is safe). The £500 they took was all our money until the next payday it was for bills, food shopping and petrol to get to work and back. I only really mentioned Christmas as this is a big black cloud hanging over what would otherwise be a very joful time of year especially since we have a toddler. It also cuts down the amount of working days this month has left which can cause all sorts of delays. We are not the sort of people who are in a position to throw our month around at any time of the year which is why I saved a sensible amount towards gifts throughout the year and our only other extravagance would be buying a turkey instead of a chicken that week and possibley splashing out on something in the way of a tipple :-) the added cost of which we will use our carefully collected Nectar points towards, the point is we currently don't have any money to buy anything we need to live, the car is almost out of petrol and we have enough food in the house to last until Friday and no funds beyond that.
Getting back to the point Lloyds TSB insist they cannot recall the DD as Express loans have taken money that way before and therefore have an "existing authority". However we have followed the email up with sereval phone calls and it has been passed to Express Loans complaints and Refunds dept. The girl my husband spoke to said she was very suprised as this sort of thing was very rare we thought that was odd given that they have an entire dept dedicated to complaints and refunds!
The upshot is that they agree the money was taken by mistake and they will be issuing a refund this should be with us within 2 working days so fingers crossed. Having dealt with these kind of people before I very much doubt it will be that speedy so any advice on what or who to threaten them with to speed the process up would be greatly appreciated
