Student Loan Charges

Options
My first post so please bear with me and be kind!!

I got my student loan, £1,200 about 10 years ago. Since being at Uni I have not earned enough to be required to pay it back yet so I have been deferring each year. (I would have been paying back by now, but more to the story!!)

About 7 years ago, I missed the deferment deadline and was late. As they could only backdate this for 3 months, I then owed money. I was very stupid and ignored all their letters for payment. They charged me per letter sent, and interest etc etc. Over the years, this has mounted up to over £500 in charges. I have paid the majority of this back but feel it could have been put to better use in paying off the loan itself!!

I just wondered, with people claiming back bank charges and credit card charges, whether I can claim back the money I have already paid in charges from the Student Loans Company and use it to pay off the original loan.

Anyone have any experience of this or advice?

Perhaps I should charge them for the amount of time I have been waiting to be put through to their call centre!!?

:p
