Secret Santa Hell

I face office Secret Santa's and a mixture of joy and dread.

Joy that everyone in the office is going to get a little pressie and in the main it will be fun. Dread because it can go horribly wrong...

I'm reminded of the year when (in another company) we all went out for Xmas lunch and handed out the Secret Santas. It was fun for almost everyone - except me. The person who picked out my name had forgotten all about it and didn't get me anything. Everyone else sat around the table opening their gifts and having a laugh. I sat there with nothing, feeling like a right chump. My Santa was a miserable git at the best of times and this didn't improve his demeanour any, didn't do much for mine either. :(

Another year (and yet another company) I picked out the boss. He was very unpopular and severly lacking in people skills. I bought him a copy of Dale Carnegie's "How To Win Friends and Influence People" and wrapped it up with tongue firmly in cheek. When he unwrapped it his face was like thunder - he really didn't get the joke. Everyone else knew that I had bought it (we were a small team) but thankfully no-one gave me away. He left the company shortly afterwards....

My worst ever christmas present was when I was unhappily married to my ex and and about to be divorced . His sisters present to me was a book called........ The Outsider!. She gave my ex a bottle of champagne and a packet of condoms ( no doubt to celebrate his newly single status).

  • Oh dear!

One years work secret santa I was given red sequin nipple tassels and an edible willy ring. I kid you not. (Still no idea who it was actually from though lol)
  • I hate Secret Santa. One year I draw out a name of a girl I barely knew (I was new in the dept), so I got her some fairly standard bath stuff. When we all unwrapped the presents she was sitting near me and was very vocal in her disgust - how rude and ungrateful! Needless to say I didn't make the effort to get to know her much after that.

I too was dreading Secret Santa - I worked with a lively bunch of mainly girls under 30, I am reserved by nature and was anticipating being the butt of the joke. One by one the presents were handed out and the shrieks of laughter grew louder and louder.... My turn came, and my heart sunk as two C sized batteries dropped out :( As I took the wrapping paper off, a small batter powered childs toy appears - it was a Mother dog who rotated and picked up her pups one by one via a magnet on their back, and deposited them at the top of a small slide, where they slid down to be picked up again - it was lovely and reflected my love of dogs. To this day I don't know who bought it for me, but they really guessed well and it was one of the best Christmas presents I've ever been brought.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • We did a secret Santa on a mums group that i'm a part of, I got given a michael buble calendar and chocolates, i gave mine a small pamper hamper, chocs/ small bottle of wine, hair and bath stuff. It's the first secret santa i've taken part in and enjoyed it.

At my old job my boss made us all take part in secret santa and said we had to spend £10, this was stressed numerous times!
I got a music mad colleague a cd of a band I thought he may like and some of his favourite chocolates - he loved both. My boss had to buy for me and she got me 2 tacky moneyboxes that obviously didn't cost £10, I doubt they cost her £5! I know it sounds so ungrateful but I was so annoyed, I always feel that I end up on the bad end of secret santa! To be fair I understand her thought behind them, she had got them for me as I was at uni and she thought I would need to save, the thought was there I guess but who needs 2 moneyboxes?! One was a handbag and the other a shoe sprayed in tacky paint, they just weren't "me"!
They ended up at one of my mum's charity coffee mornings.
