Why is the mortgage paid and deducted from JSA

Can anyone tell me why my mortgage interest is taken from my JSA which only leaves me with £41.00 a week to live on with 2 children yet if I was in a rented house the rent would be paid by the council and I would be £95.00 per week better off.
Why should homeowners have to pay money from their JSA yet rent is paid by councils? 3 votes

What you might find is your JSA payment is increased by the mortgage interest benefit then the payment is taken from your benefit to pay your mortgage. At the end of the day the payment you get should be the same as everyone else.
JSA income based is either £71 a week for one person or £111.45 for a couple. You will not be £95 a week better off.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Council should pay mortgage interestWhy should you get full JSA and your morgage interest paid when council tennents get full JSA and rent?....
Bcause by paying your morgage interest you are getting an investment in your financial future. If you sell your house in the future you can cash in on the fact house prices go up over time. If you are a council tennent you get nothing long term to cash in on, you may have your rent paid but you own nothing.
The poll could be worded better.0 -
Council should pay mortgage interestI agree that the system is unfair. If rent is being paid by housing benefit then that rent goes to a landlord. They then benefit from their investment, much of which has been funded by their tenants claiming housing benefit... mortgage payments are usually much less than rent. Eg athe mortgage on a house might be £700 a month, but the rent on that same house would be £1200. Housing benefit would cover all of the rent, but not all of the mortgage.0
